Male Jackson's widowbirds display in groups known as leks to potential mates, with a unique and wonderous dance.
As they repeatedly jump, splendid, long tails flying high above flattened grass patches, they seem oblivious to the buffalo and elephant herds that often pass their way. Red, yellow and orange flowers of the many aloes in The Conservation Area become more visible as the visitor descends down the northern slopes of the Highlands to Oldupai and the short grass plains. A huge variety of brightly coloured sunbirds feed from them, and carry nectar and insects back to their newly fledged chicks. Tiny replicas of their parent birds

Giraffe, necks stretched to the freshly washed canopies of the acacia trees, keep a wary eye on their young, many still with their umbilical cords dangling, as they wait in creches for their mother's return and a milk drinking session. With all the gazelles on the short grass plains, of course the chances of seeing cheetah are great. Bat-eared foxes are breeding and the young just emerging from burrows to be introduced to hunting insects at night with their parents.Lion prides are taking the opportunity to use all of their territories, as there is standing water on the plains.

The ever changing wet-season weather pattern has once again surprised us here in The Ngorongoro Conservation Area by a heavy January beginning, followed by a lower than average rain fall through to April.
Suddenly now, when the plains were beginning to dry out, the rains are upon us again.
The migration
, which had begun to move into the woodlands in the west has swung around and are streaming onto the short grass plains surrounding Ndutu.
The Highlands are a blaze of yellow, as the mixed herds graze their way through high stands of flowers.
The Crater floor is bursting with life as the good times return for all the resident species.
